Hyperlite Wakesurf Boards: The Industry Leaders

Founded in 1991, Hyperlite is the longest standing wakeboard and wakesurf board manufacturer in the world. After getting started with wakeboards, the Redmond, Washington based company has expanded its watersports offerings to include paddleboards, life vests, boat accessories, and, of course, wakesurf boards. As the sport of wakesurfing has exploded in popularity across North America, Hyperlite has entrenched itself as the leading wakesurf board manufacturer thanks to its commitment to developing high-performance, long-lasting wakesurf boards. Their expert design and top-notch craftsmanship will have you feeling like you’re surfing a brand new board year after year. In this article, we’ll explore the wide range of Hyperlite wakesurf boards to help you choose the one that best suits you and your surfers.

Determining the Right Board for You

The first step in determining the right board for you is determining which style of board you want. Namely, are you looking for a Surf, Skim, or Hybrid style board. This will be determined primarily by the skill & experience level of your surfers, as well as what type of surfing they want to do. We wrote a whole guide on how to choose the best wakesurf board for you, which you can check out here

Once you have determined the style of board that you want, let’s dive into Hyperlite’s different offerings within each of these categories.

Best Surf Style Wakesurf Boards

Surf style boards are the ones that most closely resemble those of traditional, ocean-faring surf boards. Beamy, buoyant, and lengthy compared to Hybrid or Skim style boards, Surf style wakesurf boards are going to give you excellent speed, control, and power. Let’s check out some of Hyperlite’s best Surf offerings.

Hyperlite Landlock

A staple of any group of wakesurfers starting out, the Hyperlite Landlock is “the first car” of wakesurf boards. But not the kind of first car that you’re embarrassed to be seen in or gives you doubts whether it can make it up the hill. The Landlock holds its own out there against the big boys. Voluminous, long, and tri-finned, it’s the perfect board to learn on and hone your skills over the first season or two wakesurfing. Have lots of visitors come and need a durable, fun board for the newbies to learn on, while still allowing the more intermediate riders to put on a show? Look no further than the Landlock.

Hyperlite Quad

Stable enough to learn on while still powerful enough to fly off the top of the wake. That’s what you get with the Hyperlite Quad. Featuring Hyperlite’s most innovative construction feature, CarboNetX, the crisscrossed fibers store energy like springs that helps the board powerfully pop out of every carve. Combined with a quad-fin setup in the tail, you’d be hard-pressed to find another board with this level of responsiveness.

Hyperlite X Superbrand Bucket Chucker

By far the best-named board of them all, the Bucket Chucker is aptly named for its ability to thrash around large volumes of water. With its quad-finned tail, it holds its position extremely well, allowing the rider to blast up and out of the wave. Get the cameras rolling when someone’s shredding this bad boy, just make sure they’re waterproof…the Bucket Chucker’s splash zone knows no limits!

Best Hybrid Style Wakesurf Boards

The Hybrid Style wakesurf board is where Hyperlite thrives. Where you’re looking for something on the surfier side, the skimmier side, or the Goldilocks zone between the two, Hyperlite has a great option for you.

Hyperlite Broadcast

The self-anointed “family sedan of the wakesurfing world” the Hyperlite Broadcast is one of the best-selling wakesurf boards on the market. If you’re looking for a “one board quiver” then this is the board for you. Its durability and performance punch above their weight class for such an accessible price point. Plus, although it’s intended for beginner and intermediate riders, it won’t hold advanced riders back from being able to spin and catch some air off the wave.

Hyperlite Time Machine

For intermediate riders look to get their first taste of catching air, check out the Hyperlite Time Machine. Responsive, lightweight, and fast in the wave, this board will give you the acceleration you need to pop off the top of the wave. At the same time, it’s solid and stable enough to help you handle any chop on the landing.

Hyperlite Shim

The perfect marriage of skim board slashiness and hybrid board control, the Hyperlite Shim is the board for the surfer who loves to explore all parts of the wave. Accelerate quickly from front to back, make powerful carves, and still have some fun at the top of the wave with this Hybrid board that leans a little towards the Skimmier side of life.

Hyperlite Automatic

Classic Surf board cruisiness meets Hybrid board carvability. That’s what you get with the Hyperlite Automatic. Regardless of the wave height, length, or pitch, this board guarantees a great ride with hard slashes and powerful pops.

Best Skim Style Wakesurf Boards

Feeling ready to say goodbye to the rear control provided by Surf and Hybrid boards? Transitioning to Skim wakesurf boards definitely takes some getting used to as they have drastically different maneuverability. Make sure the cameras are rolling the first few times someone tries a Skim board. But once you get a feel for it they’re a ton of fun and give you access to a whole new bag of tricks to try!

Hyperlite Hi-Fi

Looking to get buttery out there? Look no further than the Hyperlite Hi-Fi. Spin, slash, and shred your way all around the wake with this expert level skim board. Super lightweight thanks to its carbon fibre core material, this board will feel like a wet banana peel to beginner surfers, but is incredibly fun and playful for the seasoned shredder.

Wakesurf Board Sizing

Once you’ve decided which wakesurf board you want to buy, the next step is to determine the right size board for you. The two main size metrics to consider are board length and board volume. Determining the correct size for you and your surfers depends on a couple of factors, including:

  • Surfer weight
  • Surfer height
  • Wave size, and
  • Surfer skill level

Determining the correct board size is specific to the shape and style of the board, so typically the manufacturer will include a size chart to help you choose. We’ve also created our own guide to determining the right wakesurf board size so that you can take the right factors into consideration.

Save Big on Last Year’s Hyperlite Models

Let’s face it, wakesurfing, as with all watersports, can get expensive. One of the best ways to save is to shop for last year’s models. Typically the technology and design doesn’t change drastically from year to year. In fact, a lot of the time the biggest change is simply new graphics! Check out last year’s Hyperlite wakesurf boards and save big while they’re still in stock. Happy surfing!
