Lisbon to Cascais: A Day Trip From Lisbon to the Beach

Home to historic cobbled streets, beautiful beaches, and outstanding hotels and restaurants, the city of Cascais is a postcard-worthy destination on the southern Portuguese coast. More than just a beach town, Cascais attracts tourists from all across Europe, as well as intercontinental tourists on vacation looking for a day trip from Lisbon to Cascais.

Being located just 30km (19 miles) from Lisbon makes this quaint fishing town one of the best day trips you can take from the Portuguese capital.

Here’s how to get from Lisbon to Cascais, how to spend the day there, and some can’t miss spots to check out while you’re visiting.

Getting from Lisbon to Cascais

When staying in Lisbon, Cascais is easily accessible by either Uber or train. Start your day with brunch in Lisbon at one of our favourite spots and then make your way to Lisbon to Cascais.

Taking the train from Lisbon to Cascais is fairly straightforward, as trains depart regularly from the Cais do Sodre station. A €4.50 roundtrip ticket makes this a very cost-effective solution, and probably the most popular among tourists.

If you’re looking for even more convenience or are travelling with multiple people, it could be worth taking an Uber. An Uber from central Lisbon to Cascais costs roughly €25 and will get you exactly where you need to go in about half an hour. We’d recommend getting dropped off in a central part of the city such as Largo da Estação, which will put you in a great place to start your Cascais exploring.

The Beaches of Cascais, This is What You Came For

A great day in Cascais revolves around time spent soaking up the sun on one of its spectacular beaches. There are four beaches located within walking distance of the city center –  Praia da Rainha, Praia da Conceição, Praia da Duquesa, and Praia da Ribeira.

All four of these beaches feature pristine sand, beautiful views of boats passing in and out of the harbour, and cold ocean water. The waves are relatively small here versus some of the more exposed beaches that you may visit around Lisbon, or at other spots along the Portuguese coastline.

Praia da Conceição is our personal favourite as it offers lots of space, clean and shallow swimming, lots of great people-watching, and nearby amenities in the form of food, drink, and bathroom options. There are covered lounge chairs with umbrellas that you can rent, but we were very happy in the open, sandy part of the beach and there’s lots of space either way. We bought a massive beach blanket from one of the sellers working the beach which worked out great. Best €8 investment we ever made!
