Sustainable Loungewear Guide

Sustainable Loungewear Guide
23 Shares

Whether you’re working from home, or just lounging around the house, if you’re on the hunt for sustainable loungewear that you can feel good about buying, I’ve got you covered! I spent weeks pulling together my favorite sustainable brands and scouring the web for new undiscovered gems to bring you this guide. Since everyone has different tastes, I’ve got a wide variety of sustainable loungewear styles too, so there’s sure to be something for everyone here!

Before we jump into the good stuff, I wanted to touch quickly on how I filtered this list, and selected these companies that I thought had substantial sustainability initiatives for their loungewear. When looking at a brand’s sustainability, some of the main categories of impact include materials, production, and packaging.

Through my research, I found that many companies who labeled themselves as sustainable were excited to share their ethical production and sustainable packaging initiatives (which are both great!). However, it was inherently less common to see companies using sustainable materials as well, which is why I decided to focus my guide mostly on that.

Ok, so we’re looking for sustainable materials. What’s that even look like? Well, the most common types are made of:

– Recycled materials (either from plastic or other recycled fabrics)

– Natural fibers (like hemp)

– Organic materials (like organic cotton)

– Deadstock (unused fabric that would have been thrown away)

Alright, now that you know what we’re looking for,  let’s jump into it!

Pricing Guide:

$ = under $100

$$ = $100 – $150

$$$ = $150 – $200

$$$$ = over $200

My Favorite Sustainable Loungewear Brands:

Marine Layer

Price: $-$$

Size Range: XS-XL

Based in: San Francisco, California

Materials: Recycled Plastics, Upcycled Cotton, Tencel, Modal, Linen, Organic Cotton, and Hemp

I could write a love letter to Marine Layer that would go on forever, but to get down to it, they design vintage-inspired, comfy pieces that will last a lifetime. They’re obsessed with only using the highest quality and softest fabrics, that they develop themselves with the goal of minimizing their environmental impact. Everything is produced small-batch, with a quality that’s built to last, and they even created an entire clothing line, Re-Spun, made of old tees that their customers had donated, which they then recycled into the comfiest line of sustainable loungewear out there. If you donate some old tees, they’ll even send you a giftcard to make purchasing your first piece that much easier.

Mate the Label

Price: $-$$

Size Range: XS-XL

Based in: Los Angeles, California

Materials: Organic Cotton, Organic Terry, Tencel, Hemp, Linen

What’s more sustainable than basics so classic, you’ll never need to replace them? MATE makes clean loungewear essentials, mostly in a palette of soft, earthy colors, that you’ll wanna wear 24/7 whether you’re at home or not. They strictly source GOTS Certified Organic Cotton, and produce everything right in Los Angeles.

Back Beat Co

Price: $-$$$

Size Range: XS-XL

Based in: Los Angeles, California

Materials: Organic Cotton, Recycled Cotton, Hemp, Tencel

Inspired by old school Cali surf’n’skate culture, Back Beat Co focuses on producing colorful basics like tees and sweatshirts, infused with vintage style elements. They focus on using “Low Impact” fabrics that are either recycled or sustainably farmed. Their pieces are certainly a bit edgier than some of the other basics I’ve included in this list, but I really love their style!

Patagonia

Price: $-$$

Size Range: XS-XL

Based in: Ventura, California

Materials: Recycled Polyester, Tencel, Linen, Organic Cotton, and Hemp

Honestly, Patagonia is a pillar in the sustainability space, and something most brands on this list probably look to for inspiration. From their use of sustainable materials to their Worn Wear program where you can buy used Patagonia clothing to their ethical production – the list of reasons why you should love Patagonia goes on and on. Their CEO has even come out and said he doesn’t want people to buy more Patagonia, but hold on to what they have, which is crazy!! Not to mention, you know for sure that their sustainable loungewear pieces won’t go out of style as most Patagonia styles are classics that have literally been around for 50+ years.

Thread & Supply

Price: $

Size Range: XS-L

Based in: Los Angeles, California

Materials: Organic Cotton, Linen, Recycled Polyester, Tencel, Modal, Viscose

A small, family run, company from LA, Thread & Supply makes cozy and comfy wardrobe essentials and staples. Their laid back pieces are made of premium quality materials, and they have a great guide across their site that shows exactly which sustainable fibers each piece is made of. I looove the neutral colors of their chic basics.

Alternative Apparel

Price: $

Size Range: XS-XL

Based in: Norcross, Georgia

Materials: Organic Cotton, Recycled Polyester, Recycled Cotton, Hemp-blend Jersey, Tencel Modal

Soft, simple, and sustainable is Alternative’s motto. With clothes made to feel like they’ve been already worn in, their simple styles are great basics to add to any wardrobe. They’ve got some super soft and fuzzy pieces that I linked above and would recommend spending the whole day in 🙂

Reformation

Price: $

Size Range: XS-3X

Based in: Los Angeles, California

Materials: Organic Cotton, Tencel Modal, Recycled Cotton, Tencel Lyocell, Linen, Hemp, Deadstock

Reformation is a classic when it comes to sustainable fashion. While their main focus isn’t normally on loungewear, they have a few great sustainable loungewear pieces that’d be great to wear both in and out of the house. They’ve even got sustainable organic cotton tie-dye sweatsuits! Too perfect.

Spell

Price: $$$

Size Range: XS-XL

Based in: Byron Bay, Australia

Materials: Recycled Synthetics, Recycled Cotton, Tencel, Modal, Organic Linen, Organic Cotton

One of my favorite Australian indie brands, Spell designs chic bohemian pieces made out of sustainably sourced materials. They also produce everything in limited batches, so no excess is ever created. They’ve got a few great sustainable loungewear pieces that have unique style to them, contrasting with many of the more basic pieces on this list.

Outdoor Voices

Price: $

Size Range: XS-XL

Based in: Austin, Texas

Materials: Recycled Polyester, Recycled Wool, Cloud Knit

Normally all about “Doing Things” Outdoor Voices designs their pieces with movement in mind, but that doesn’t mean lounging in their stylish apparel isn’t just as great! While they are sustainably minded, most of their pieces aren’t made with organic or recycled materials yet. However, the ones linked above are, and they’re on a mission to develop more sustainable pieces in the near future.

Their styles are designed for longevity, with each collection building off the previous, and intended to be complimentary so that all of their pieces can be styled together. Their funky style roped me in – if you like modern color blocking you’ll love them!

Whimsy + Row

Ok, if you love linen as much as I do, then this store is truly a no-brainer. While their main focus is bedding and other linens for your home, I Love Linen makes some of the cutest linen loungewear sets I’ve found. They only make small batch quantities to avoid waste, and it’s all organic linen dyed with non-toxic dyes.

Started by three brothers who loved to crochet, Krochet Kids was founded when they recognized a passion for creating jobs that change lives, and realized that crochet could do just that. Dame

Based in: Los Angeles, California

Materials: Deadstock

Focused on bringing you staple wardrobe pieces, Dame aims to make getting dressed and looking good, the easiest part of your day. Unlike many others on their list, the materials Dame uses for their sustainable loungewear is not as traditionally sustainable as the organic and recycled materials many other companies I’ve shared here use. However, they use deadstock material from large fashion houses, that would otherwise be put to waste, and therefore are creating beautiful sustainable loungewear from otherwise trashed materials. If you’re looking for slightly different materials, then definitely check Dame out.
